RESUMO

One-dimensional (1D) high-entropy compounds (HECs) with subnano diameters are highly attractive because long-range electron delocalization may occur along the high-entropy atomic chain, which results in extraordinary properties. Nevertheless, synthesizing such 1D HECs presents a substantial challenge, and the physicochemical attributes of these novel structures remain ambiguous. Herein, we developed a comelting-filling-freezing-modification (co-MFFM) method for synthesizing 1D high-entropy metal phosphide (HEP) by simultaneously encapsulating various metal cations within single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) followed with a phosphorization process. The resulting 1D HEP nanowires confined within SWCNTs exhibit crucial features, including an ultrafine, high-entropy, and amorphous structure, along with a core-shell arrangement. The SWCNT as a shell could donate π electrons to 1D HEP for enhanced electron delocalization and protect 1D HEP as an atomically single-layered protective covering, thus boosting high electrocatalytic activity and stability. Moreover, the co-MFFM method demonstrates scalability for mass production and displays universal applicability to the synthesis of various 1D HECs.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Diabetic nephropathy (DN) is a prevalent chronic microvascular complication of diabetes and the leading cause of end-stage renal disease (ESRD). Understanding the progressive etiology of DN is critical for the development of effective health policies and interventions. Recent research indicated that polystyrene microplastics (PS-MPs) contaminate our diets and accumulate in various organs, including the liver, kidneys, and muscles. METHODS: In this study, ten-week-old db/db mice and db/m mice were fed. Besides, db/db mice were divided into two groups: PS-MPs group (oral administration of 0.5 µm PS-MPs) and an H2O group, and they were fed for three months. A type II diabetes model was established using db/db mice to investigate the effects of PS-MPs on body weight, blood glucose level, renal function, and renal fibrosis. RESULTS: The results demonstrated that PS-MPs significantly exacerbated various biochemical indicators of renal tissue damage, including fasting blood glucose, serum creatinine, blood urea nitrogen, and blood uric acid. Additionally, PS-MPs worsened the pathological alterations and degree of fibrosis in renal tissue. An increased oxidative stress state and elevated levels of inflammatory cytokines, such as tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), interleukin-1ß (IL-1ß), and monocyte chemoattractant protein-1 (MCP-1) were identified. Furthermore, PS-MPs significantly enhanced renal fibrosis by inhibiting the transition from epithelial cells to mesenchymal cells, specifically through the inhibition of the TGF-ß/Smad signaling pathway. The expression levels of NOD-like receptor protein 3 (NLRP3), apoptosis-associated speck-like protein containing a CARD (ASC), Caspase-1, and cleaved Caspase-1, which are inflammasome proteins, were significantly elevated in the PS-MPs group. CONCLUSION: The findings suggested that PS-MPs could aggravate kidney injury and renal fibrosis in db/db mice by promoting NLRP3/Caspase-1 and TGF-ß1/Smads signaling pathways. These findings had implications for elucidating the role of PS-MPs in DN progression, underscoring the necessity for additional research and public health interventions.

RESUMO

Acquiring a deep insight into the electron transfer mechanism and applications of one-dimensional (1D) van der Waals heterostructures (vdWHs) has always been a significant challenge. Herein, through direct observation using aberration-corrected transmission electron microscopy (AC-TEM), we verify the stable formation of a high-quality 1D heterostructure composed of PbI2@single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs). The phenomenon of electron transfer between PbI2 and SWCNT is elucidated through spectroscopic investigations, including Raman and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Electrochemical testing indicates the electron transfer and enduring stability of 1D PbI2 within SWCNTs. Moreover, leveraging the aforementioned electron transfer mechanism, we engineer self-powered photodetectors that exhibit exceptional photocurrent and a 3-order-of-magnitude switching ratio. Subsequently, we reveal its unique electron transfer behavior using Kelvin probe force microscopic (KPFM) tests. According to KPFM, the average surface potential of SWCNTs decreases by 80.6 mV after filling. Theoretical calculations illustrate a charge transfer of 0.02 e per unit cell. This work provides an effective strategy for the in-depth investigation and application of electron transfer in 1D vdWHs.

RESUMO

Singe-chirality single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) produced by selective polymer extraction have been actively investigated for their semiconductor applications. However, to fulfil the needs of biocompatible applications, the organic solvents in polymer-sorted SWCNTs impose a limitation. In this study, we developed a novel strategy for organic-to-aqueous phase exchange, which involves thoroughly removing polymers from the sorted SWCNTs, followed by surfactant covering and redispersing of the cleaned SWCNTs in water. Importantly, the obtained aqueous system allows us to perform sp3 functionalization of the SWCNTs, leading to a strong photoluminescence emission at 1550 nm from the defect sites of (10,5) SWCNTs. These functionalized SWCNTs as infrared light emitters show considerable potential for bioimaging applications. This exchange-and-functionalization strategy opens the door for future biocompatible applications of polymer-sorted SWCNTs.

RESUMO

The emergence of one-dimensional van der Waals heterostructures (1D vdWHs) opens up potential fields with unique properties, but precise synthesis remains a challenge. The utilization of mixed conductive types of carbon nanotubes as templates has imposed restrictions on the investigation of the electrical behavior and interlayer interaction of 1D vdWHs. In this study, we efficiently encapsulated silver iodide in high-purity semiconducting single-walled carbon nanotubes (sSWCNTs), forming 1D AgI@sSWCNT vdWHs. We characterized the semiconductor-metal transition and increased the carrier concentration of individual AgI@sSWCNTs via sensitive dielectric force microscopy and confirmed the results through electrical device tests. The electrical behavior transition was attributed to an interlayer charge transfer, as demonstrated by Kelvin probe force microscopy. Furthermore, we showed that this method of synthesizing 1D heterostructures can be extended to other metal halides. This work opens the door for the further exploration of the electrical properties of 1D vdWHs.

RESUMO

Significant advancements in electronic devices and integrated circuits have been facilitated by semiconducting single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) sorted by conjugated polymers (CPs). However, the variety of CPs with single-chirality selectivity is limited, and the sorting results are strongly dependent on the chiral distribution of the starting materials. To address this, we develop an iterative strategy to achieve single-chirality SWCNT separation from aqueous to organic systems, based on a multistep tandem extraction technique that allows a gentle and nondestructive separation of surfactants from SWCNTs, ensuring an efficient system transfer. In parallel, we refined the iterative sorting process between CPs. Employing two starting materials with narrow diameter distributions, using three CPs, we successfully sorted out five single-chirality SWCNTs of the (9,5), (8,6), (10,5), (8,7), and (11,3) species in organic systems. This strategy bridges the gap between aqueous and organic separation systems, achieving efficient complementarity between them.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Sensitivity skin (SS) is a common skin disorders, which have a various of clinical manifestation. Facial erythema is common objective symptom of SS. However, the reasons for the occurrence of erythema in sensitive skin are not fully understood. AIMS: In this study, we preliminarily explain the possible factors inducing erythema of sensitive skin by evaluating facial erythematous reaction to lactic acid sting test (LAST) and capsaicin test (CAT) in subjects with sensitive skin. METHODS: A total of 197 subjects were divided into five groups, that is, normal controls (NC), LAST-positive (LAST+ ), both LAST and CAT positive (L+ C+ ), both LAST and CAT negative (L- C- ) and CAT-positive (CAT+ ). Erythema index (EI), a* value, and tissue viability imaging (TIVI) were measured before and after LAST and CAT, The ΔEI, Δa*, and ΔTIVI before and after LAST and CAT were calculated, and the correlation between the scores of CAT, EI values, a* values, and TIVI values were analyzed to clarify the causes of facial erythema. RESULTS: Our results showed that EI values and a* values were significantly higher in the L+ C+ and CAT+ group than in NC group, TIVI values were higher in the L+ C+ group than in NC group. ΔEI and Δa* values after LAST did not differ significantly among five groups. However, ΔEI values in L+ C+ group were higher than that in L- C- group, while Δa* values were higher in CAT+ group than in NC. Moreover, ΔTIVI values in L+ C+ group and CAT+ group were also significantly higher than that in NC group after capsaicin stimulation. CAT scores correlated positively with EI, a* and TIVI values. CONCLUSION: Our results suggest that sensitive skin subjects with positive CAT are more likely to experience erythema reactions, and vasodilation is more pronounced after capsaicin stimulation. Reducing vascular and neural hyperreactivity could be therapeutic target in management of facial erythema in subjects with sensitive skin.

RESUMO

Single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) that have a reproducible distribution of chiralities or single chirality are among the most competitive materials for realizing post-silicon electronics. Molecular doping, with its non-destructive and fine-tunable characteristics, is emerging as the primary doping approach for the structure-controlled SWCNTs, enabling their eventual use in various functional devices. This review provides an overview of important advances in the area of molecular doping of structure-controlled SWCNTs and their applications. The first part introduces the underlying physical process of molecular doping, followed by a comprehensive survey of the commonly used dopants for SWCNTs to date. Then, it highlights how the convergence of molecular doping and structure-sorting strategies leads to significantly improved functionality of SWCNT-based field-effect transistor arrays, transparent electrodes in optoelectronics, thermoelectrics, and many emerging devices. At last, several challenges and opportunities in this field are discussed, with the hope of shedding light on promoting the practical application of SWCNTs in future electronics.

RESUMO

Objective: This study aimed to explore the association of the oxidative balance score (OBS) with total abdominal fat mass (TAFM) and visceral adipose tissue mass (VATM) percentages among young and middle-aged U.S. adults. Methods: Young and middle-aged adults in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) from 2011 to 2018 were included. Analysis of variance and Rao-Scott adjusted chi-square tests were used to compare the characteristics across quartiles of OBS. Univariate and multivariate weighted logistic regression models were employed to explore the relationship between OBS and the risks of high TAFM or high VATM percentage in the general population and subgroups, while the interaction effects were tested with a likelihood test. Weighted restricted cubic spline analyses were utilized to assess the non-linear association of OBS with TAFM and VATM percentages. Results: The final sample included 8,734 young and middle-aged non-institutionalized U.S. adults representing 134.7 million adults. Compared with adults in the first quartile of OBS, those with higher OBS were less likely to have a high TAFM percentage; the ORs and 95% CI for adults in the second, third, and highest quartiles of OBS were 0.70 (0.53-0.94), 0.49 (0.36-0.60), and 0.25 (0.18-0.36), respectively. Similar trends were observed in the association between OBS and VATM percentages. Moreover, similar effects were confirmed in the sensitivity analyses and subgroup analyses according to demographic characteristics. Regarding the OBS subclass, higher dietary OBS and lifestyle OBS were also correlated with decreased ORs of high TAFM and VATM percentages. Conclusion: This study strongly suggests that higher OBS, as well as higher dietary OBS and lifestyle OBS, are significantly correlated with lower risks of abdominal obesity and visceral fat accumulation. The findings highlight the importance of an antioxidant-rich diet and maintaining a healthy lifestyle in reducing the risks.

RESUMO

Fiber-shaped photodetectors (FPDs) with multidirectional light absorption properties offer exciting opportunities for intelligent optoelectronic textiles. However, achieving FPDs capable of working in ampule environments, especially with high sensitivity, remains a fundamental challenge. Here, quasi-solid-state twisted-fiber photoelectrochemical photodetectors (FPPDs) consisting of photoanode, gel electrolyte, and counter electrode are successfully assembled. In situ decorated n-type one-dimensional (1D) TiO2 nanowire arrays with 2D Ni-Fe metal-organic framework (NiFeMOF) nanosheets serve as hierarchical heterojunction photoanodes, thereby optimizing carrier transfer dynamics at the photoanode/electrolyte interface. As expected, the resulting self-powered FPPD exhibits 88.6 mA W-1 high responsiveness and a < 30 ms fast response time. Significantly, our FPPD can operate in both terrestrial and aquatic environments thanks to its intrinsic ionic properties, making it a versatile tool for detecting ultraviolet light on land and facilitating optical communication underwater. These high-sensitivity self-powered FPPDs with hierarchical heterojunction photoelectrodes hold promise for the development of wearable amphibious optoelectronic textiles.

RESUMO

Objective: This study aims to investigate the potential prognostic value of albumin-bilirubin (ALBI) score in breast cancer patients with liver metastasis after surgery. Methods: This was a retrospective study of 178 breast cancer patients with liver metastasis after surgery. ALBI score was calculated by the following formula: (log10 bilirubin × 0.66) - (albumin × 0.085). The optimal cutoff value of ALBI score was assessed by X-tile. The clinical influence of ALBI score on survival outcomes using Kaplan-Meier method, Log-rank test, Cox proportional hazards regression model. The calibration curves, decision curve analysis and time-dependent ROC curve were used to assess the predictive performance of the nomogram's models. Results: The classifications of 178 breast cancer patients with liver metastasis after surgery were as follows: low ALBI score group (<-3.36) vs. high ALBI score group (≥-3.36). The Cox proportional hazards regression model indicated that ALBI score was a potential predictor. Kaplan-Meier survival curve performed that the median disease free survival (p = 0.0029) and overall survival (p<0.0001) in low ALBI score group were longer than in high ALBI score group. The ALBI-based nomograms had good predictive performance. Conclusions: The ALBI score has high prognostic ability for survival time in breast cancer with liver metastasis after surgery. These models will be valuable in discriminating patients at high risks of liver metastasis.

RESUMO

In this work, we report the monolithic three-dimensional integration (M3D) of hybrid memory architecture based on resistive random-access memory (RRAM), named M3D-LIME. The chip featured three key functional layers: the first was Si complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor (CMOS) for control logic; the second was computing-in-memory (CIM) layer with HfAlOx-based analog RRAM array to implement neural networks for feature extractions; the third was on-chip buffer and ternary content-addressable memory (TCAM) array for template storing and matching, based on Ta2O5-based binary RRAM and carbon nanotube field-effect transistor (CNTFET). Extensive structural analysis along with array-level electrical measurements and functional demonstrations on the CIM and TCAM arrays was performed. The M3D-LIME chip was further used to implement one-shot learning, where ~96% accuracy was achieved on the Omniglot dataset while exhibiting 18.3× higher energy efficiency than graphics processing unit (GPU). This work demonstrates the tremendous potential of M3D-LIME with RRAM-based hybrid memory architecture for future data-centric applications.

RESUMO

Objective: We aimed to investigate the relationship of metal exposure and latent tuberculosis infection (LTBI) among US adults and adolescents. Methods: Participants from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys (NHANES 2011 ~ 2012) were included. Multiple logistic regression models were used to explore the associations between metal exposure and LTBI. A total of 5,248 adults and 1,860 adolescents were included in the present analysis. Results: For adults, we only found a positive association between total mercury and LTBI (OR: 1.411; 95% CI: 1.164 ~ 1.710) when used as a continuous variable. Compared with Q1, Q4 increased the prevalence of LTBI (2.303; 1.455 ~ 3.644) when used as a quartile. The OR of total mercury and LTBI was higher among females (1.517; 1.009 ~ 2.279), individuals aged 45 ~ 64 (1.457; 1.060 ~ 2.002), and non-Hispanic White individuals (1.773; 1.316 ~ 2.388). A relationship was observed among only participants with obesity (1.553; 1.040 ~ 2.319) or underweight (1.380; 1.076 ~ 1.771), with college or above (1.645; 1.184 ~ 2.286), with PIR > 3.0 (1.701; 1.217 ~ 2.376), reported smoking (1.535; 1.235 ~ 1.907) and drinking (1.464; 1.232 ~ 1.739). For adolescents, blood manganese was positively associated with LTBI. The OR and 95% CIs for each one-unit increase in the log-transformed level of blood manganese with LTBI were 9.954 (1.389 ~ 71.344). Conclusion: Significant associations were observed in girls, aged ≥12 years and in the non-Hispanic white population. In conclusion, total mercury is associated with an increased prevalence of LTBI among adults and positive association between blood manganese and LTBI was observed among adolescents. Further studies should be conducted to verify the results and explore potential biological mechanisms.

RESUMO

Formononetin is a flavonoid compound with anti-tumor and anti-inflammatory properties. However, its low solubility limits its clinical use. We employed microfluidic technology to prepare formononetin-loaded PLGA-PEGDA microspheres (Degradable polymer PLGA, Crosslinking agent PEGDA), which can encapsulate and release drugs in a controlled manner. We optimized and characterized the microspheres, and evaluated their antitumor effects. The microspheres had uniform size, high drug loading efficiency, high encapsulation efficiency, and stable release for 35 days. They also inhibited the proliferation, migration, and apoptosis. The antitumor mechanism involved the induction of reactive oxygen species and modulation of Bcl-2 family proteins. These findings suggested that formononetin-loaded PLGA-PEGDA microspheres, created using microfluidic technology, could be a novel drug delivery system that can overcome the limitations of formononetin and enhance its antitumor activity.

RESUMO

Atherosclerosis is an important cause of cerebrovascular and cardiovascular disease (CVD). Lipid infiltration, inflammation, and altered vascular stress are the critical mechanisms that cause atherosclerotic plaque formation. The hallmarks of the progression of atherosclerosis include plaque ulceration, rupture, neovascularization, and intraplaque hemorrhage, all of which are closely associated with the occurrence of CVD. Assessing the severity of atherosclerosis and plaque vulnerability is crucial for the prevention and treatment of CVD. Integrating imaging techniques for evaluating the characteristics of atherosclerotic plaques with computer simulations yields insights into plaque inflammation levels, spatial morphology, and intravascular stress distribution, resulting in a more realistic and accurate estimation of plaque state. Here, we review the characteristics and advancing techniques used to analyze intracranial and extracranial atherosclerotic plaques to provide a comprehensive understanding of atheroma.

RESUMO

One-dimensional (1D) magnetic material systems have attracted widespread interest from researchers because of their peculiar physical properties and potential applications in spintronics devices. However, the synthesis of 1D magnetic atomic chains has seldom been investigated. Here, we developed an iodine-assisted vacuum chemical vapor-phase transport (I-VCVT) method, utilizing single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) with 1D cavities as templates, and high-quality and high-efficiency fabrication of 1D atomic chains of CrCl3 was achieved. Furthermore, the structure of CrCl3 atomic chains in the confined space of SWCNTs was analyzed in detail, and the charge transfer between the 1D atomic chains and SWCNTs was investigated through spectroscopic characterization. A comprehensive study of the dynamic magnetic properties revealed the existence of spin glass states and freezing of the 1D CrCl3 atomic chains at around 3 K, which has never been seen in bulk CrCl3. Our work established an effective strategy for the control synthesis of 1D magnetic atomic chains with promising potential applications in further magnetic-based spintronics devices.

RESUMO

Fiber-shaped photodetectors (FPDs) have attracted special attention to wearable health monitoring due to their 3D absorption capabilities. However, the practical application of traditional FPDs is severely limited by the irreversible degradation of performance caused by vulnerable interface compatibility on complex deformation and a single function. Here, an integrated photoelectrochemical FPD/battery device (FPDB) is designed, consisting of a common electrode, photoanode, anode, and sol-gel electrolyte as an isolation layer, which not only effectively avoids the short circuit problem of FPD but also endows high-efficiency energy storage capacity. As expected, the resulting all-in-one triple-twisted fiber-shaped FPDB simultaneously achieves high responsiveness of 151.45 mA W-1 and excellent volume capacity of 18.75 mAh cm-3. Such a stable architectural design and multifunctional integration of functional fibers accelerate the development of next-generation wearable fabrics.

RESUMO

Current guidelines recommend hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) surveillance for at-risk individuals, including individuals with hepatitis B virus infection. However, the performance and survival benefits of annual screening have not been evaluated through multicenter prospective studies in a Chinese population. Between 2017 and 2021, we included 14,426 participants with hepatitis B surface antigen seropositivity in an annual HCC screening study in China using a multicenter prospective design with ultrasonography and serum alpha-fetoprotein. After four rounds of screening and follow-up, the adjusted hazard ratios of death after correction for lead-time and length-time biases for screen-detected cancers at the prevalent and incident rounds were 0.74 (95% confidence interval = 0.60-0.91) and 0.52 (95% confidence interval = 0.40-0.68), respectively. A meta-analysis demonstrated that HCC screening was associated with improved survival after adjusting for lead-time bias. Our findings highlight the 'real-world' feasibility and effectiveness of annual HCC screening in community settings for the early detection of HCC and to improve survival.
